FAQs

  • What is an EFTPOS machine and what types of payments does it accept?

EFTPOS refers to any card machine that will accept debit and credit card payments – and is a globally recognised term. However, eftpos (lowercase) is a brand in Australia (run by eftpos Payments Australia Ltd), that makes it possible for businesses to receive payments from an Australian customer’s bank account through their debit card, allowing electronic payments at the point of sale.

Whenever you choose to pay through CHQ or SAV on a machine in Australia, you’re paying with eftpos. It is available on all ATM or debit cards issued by Australian banks. eftpos is a domestic payments network that facilitates the transfer of funds electronically when debit or some credit payments cards are used at the point of sale. As of recent years, eftpos now also allows NFC technology (tap-and-go, contactless payments), much like Mastercard and Visa.

Square Terminal is an EFTPOS machine and an all-in-one device for taking card payments and printing receipts. Square Terminal takes chip + PIN and contactless payments. Square Terminal accepts Visa, Mastercard, eftpos, American Express, JCB and Afterpay. It comes with free Square Point of Sale software that’s easy to set up and easy to use, and a built-in battery that lasts all day, so you never miss a sale.

  • Where can I buy Square Terminal?

You can buy Square Terminal at the Square Shop. You can also buy Square Terminal at local retailers, such as Officeworks, JB Hi-FI and Harvey Norman.

  • How does Square Terminal work?

Square Terminal is a EFTPOS machine that makes it easy for any business to take card payments and run a point of sale that’s customised for exactly what your business does. And there’s Square point-of-sale software that makes selling and managing the day to day easier than ever. Streamline everything you do with Square Terminal and the right POS solution.

  • How much does Square Terminal cost?

Square Terminal costs $329, with monthly interest-free instalment options available at checkout. To connect Square Terminal to the internet via Ethernet, or to connect accessories such as a cash drawer, barcode scanner or additional printers, you can add an optional Hub for Square Terminal for $79.

  • What’s the difference between Square Terminal and Square Handheld?

Square Terminal is a complete POS solution with a built-in receipt printer, designed to work best from a countertop, while still being compact and easily moveable.

Square Handheld is a slim, portable device with a built-in camera and barcode scanner, designed to take payments, orders or manage inventory on the move – all from one POS that fits in your pocket.

  • Does Square Terminal need Wi-Fi?

Square Terminal requires connection to a Wi-Fi network or Ethernet with access to high-speed internet. Ethernet connection requires optional Hub for Square Terminal.

When Wi-Fi or Ethernet is not available, pair with a personal hotspot on your phone or a mobile broadband device (Mi-Fi). You can also use offline payments1 to keep taking payments for up to 24 hours without Wi-Fi or internet. Additional terms apply.

  • What accessories can I use with Square Terminal?

Square Terminal can do even more for your business when you connect the right accessories. With a countertop mount, you can secure Square Terminal and make checkout even more seamless. You can also add a barcode scanner or cash drawer to customise your counter – you just need the optional Hub for Square Terminal.
